THE HAGUE: CITY OF PEACE & JUSTICE

Global center for NGO’s

The Hague, seat of the Dutch parliament and government, and a ‘Royal City’ has continued to solidify its status as the City of Peace and Justice. The United Nations (UN) may have its headquarters in New York, but The Hague is where the global actors gather to work for a fair and peaceful world. The strength of the city is not only the proximity of prominent Intergovernmental- and UN organizations such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) or the International Court of Justice to name a few, but specifically the presence of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), which regardless of the subject of their activities and the size of their organization – all strive for the same goal, namely, a better world. The Hague, already home to more than 130 NGO’s now has the goal of becoming a global center for NGO’s. In order to achieve this, the Municipality is investing in enhancing the settlement process for NGOs. An example of this is collective housing with a multi-tenanted office block dedicated to NGO’s in order to improve collaboration between like-minded organizations.

Among the international organizations established in WestHolland are: the European Law Enforcement Organization (Europol), The European Union’s Judicial Cooperation Unit (Eurojust), the European Centre for Conflict Prevention (ECCP) and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Being the international city of Peace and Justice, The Hague is now also home to The Hague Security Delta (HSD), Europe’s largest safety and security cluster. Key players involved in Security are the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), CSI The Hague, Fox IT, Wurldtech and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).

19.500 dedicated people

Home to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Peace Palace and almost 240 international (governmental as well as non-governmental) organizations there are around 19,500 people dedicated to the cause of world peace already in The Hague.

“The WFIA and Bureau Internationale Zaken (BIZ) of the City of The Hague have been very supportive and helpful during the establishment of CIIL’s Hague office. CIIL encountered a number of difficulties, especially at the beginning, e.g. finding reliable notaries and tax advisors. WFIA helped CIIL with these matters and is still rendering its support, for which CIIL is very grateful”
