Chinese business community meets at Rooftop farm

September 10th, The Hague – The farm of UrbanFarmers on the rooftop of the former Philips-building was the scene of the 1st China Family Day organized by the WestHolland Foreign Investment Agency (WFIA). During the event, over 130 participants, including Chinese entrepreneurs and expats, as well as officials and their family enjoyed guided tours around the farm to learn more about this innovative and sustainable way or farming. Children were animated by face painters and balloon artists. During the tours, lunch, made by Hanting, was served at the Kookfabriek, located on the 4th floor of the industrial building. The event was organized in order to further develop the Chinese business community in the city.

Vice Mayor Karsten Klein, who visited China earlier this year in order to strengthen ties between The Hague and partnering cities Shenzhen and Qindao, stressed the importance of the Chinese business community in The Hague: “We aim to provide a glimpse of their hometown to the 12,000 Chinese residents and 80 Chinese companies who are in this region. This number of residents keeps increasing, partly because WFIA does a great job by attracting and assisting these Chinese companies to the region and helping them with establishing and developing within Europe.”

“WFIA not only assist new companies in establishing their companies here in the Netherlands but provides support to existing foreign investors. This program is called Investor Relations, which is one of our main driving forces”, says Marleen Zuijderhoudt, director at WFIA

About UrbanFarmers
The establishment of the Swiss UrbanFarmers was the first project that was realized following the “Stadslandbouw Initiative” campaign by the Municipality of The Hague. Since 2012, UF owns and operates the worldwide first commercial-scale, industrialized aquaponics rooftop farm, ‘UF001 LokDepot’, in Basel, Switzerland. In 2013, the municipality of The Hague launched the Stadlandsbouw Initiative to identify potential urban farming tenants for the vacant building ‘De Schilde’. In this selection process, UF was awarded the space of its rooftop and 6th floor to develop the largest commercial urban rooftop farm in Europe, ‘UF002 De Schilde’
