Colleague obtains letter grade at Stanford University

Our colleague Ivo Meijer has obtained his letter grade for his course ‘Leadership and Governance in Nonprofit organizations’ at Stanford University. The Stanford University Continuing Study courses are intended for people working in the industry and interested in continuing to increase their knowledge in a specific actualized topic at the university.

I followed the courses ‘Leadership and Governance in Nonprofits’, where we explored best practices and promising trends. Also, we learned about how to provide guidance and management in a commercial way for non-profits as well as (semi-) governmental organizations (like the WFIA).  I find that non-profits are often founded and managed by philanthropists with an idealistic goal. Without wanting to sound to generalistic, these spirits sometimes lack a clear business scope, which is essential in order to manage an organization professionally. Don’t forget that we are talking about organizations that sometimes deal with millions of turnover and employ dozens of workers.

For my final paper (rated with an A) I had to analyze a specific non-profit organization and frame it within the ‘theory of change’. The Hague is pre-eminently a place where many non-profits and NGOs are striving to improve the world in their specific field. The WFIA also actively tries to pursue these organizations to come to The Hague because this is where they can grow and eventually reach their goal. Gaining insight into their business model and their ‘language’ and visions makes us a better partner and ensures that we can even discuss with them how a company can be successful in our region. In addition, it has given me an understanding of the network, especially in the Bay area,  in the field of non-profits and the Impact Economy, a growing phenomenon in Silicon Valley. ” says Ivo.
